Despite being the only Rangers' forward not to register a point during the 2003 playoffs, the Rangers' organization expects big things from Paul McFarland during his sophomore season.  Originally a 10th round pick from the Wexford Bantams, McFarland was the only rookie forward aside from highly touted center: Evan McGrath to earn a spot in a Rangers' lineup filled with veteran players.  Paul enfortunately missed out on any Memorial Cup play because of the inspired play of Chad McCaffrey during the later rounds of the postseason.  Paul brings an a great amount of controlled enthusiasm to the ice every time he steps on it, and consistently has shown a "can-do" attitude while up against the odds.  McFarland didn't back away from the heavy going, nor did he shy away from a good night now and again.

While not filling the role of a power forward, Paul does adequately for his size and seems to have a legitimate nose for the net.  He scored 5 goals during very limited ice time spent mainly on the fourth line as a rookie.  As a sophomore he can expect to move up from the fourth line to the third line provided his development continues.  During his first four games of the 2003 preseason, McFarland contributed 2 goals.

Look for Paul to fill in penalty killing for the Rangers in the near future.  Richards and Kanko are expected to be their number one tandem, and with McFarland's skating and forecheck ability we could easily see him as well as Keefe splitting time on the second unit now than first unit incumbents: Derek Roy and Gregory Campbell have graduated to the pro ranks.  Since Paul has a late birthdate the 2003-'04 season will serve as his NHL draft year.  Should he continue to establish his defensive game and increase his scoring ability he could be selected in the later rounds by a NHL team in June.
